Is Low Back Pain Normal?

“Everyone has low back pain”.

“It’s just because you’re getting older”.

“You just have to live with it”.


Maybe you’ve heard these statements or something similar regarding low back pain.  Unfortunately, low back pain is exceedingly common in today’s world. There are a number of reasons for this, which we will get into in future blog posts.  It is estimated that 80-90% of people will suffer from low back pain at some point in their life and the number one predictor of future low back pain is a previous episode of low back pain.  All this brings up the question:


Is low back pain normal?


The prevalence of low back pain often leads people to believe it is just a “normal” part of life.  It is also common for people to be labeled as having a “bad back” and simply live with the understanding that low back pain flare-ups are an inconvenient part of life.


There’s no denying the fact that low back pain is a common occurrence, but that doesn’t necessarily make it “normal”.  With rare exception, pain is an indication that something is wrong. It is a message from your body to your brain saying “we need some attention down here” and ignoring that message on a consistent basis can cause problems down the road, like chronic and/or recurrent pain episodes.


So how do we stop the cycle?  What can we change in order to reduce the likelihood of chronic or recurrent low back pain?


As Einstein is credited as having said: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”.  If you don’t like your current result, what are you going to change?
